I would really like to start meditating,I am going through a bad time in my life as a woman in her early 20’s, I also enjoy this site! Getting rid of things that I don’t need and being positive,it takes time but I need help on how could I start meditating, any tips?

You could start with an app like insight timer, whicht offers both silent and guided meditations. Also you could read some more about meditating, for instance from jon kabat zinn if you want to try mindfulness meditation. There are many different forms of meditation with different practices, viewpoints and effects; you don’t need to figure this all out in advance but it can be useful to explore the differences and see what resonates with you most. For meditations that helps with feeling negative (about yourself) you could try some self-compassion guided meditations by Kristin Neff. Also finding a group or a teacher nearby can help your practice and understanding tremendously.
Enjoy the road!
Love,

I’d recommend you find a comfy pillow and start sitting still for 5 minutes a day. Add a minute every few days until you’re up to 10 minutes a day. If you’re really in a time crunch, I’ve found that singing bowls work extremely well for bringing me into the present moment in a short period of time.

I usually lie down but it took me some practice to meditate laying down without falling asleep. I’m also in my early 20s and I usually try to do it daily (doesn’t happen often) and whenever I am feeling particularly stressed, anxious or sad. It helps a lot!

These tips are so helpful I downloaded and listened to all of them.March 30, 2014 at 1:42 am #53790CameronParticipantHi all
I also began to meditate from last month. In the beginning, I tried metta mediation coz many people recommended it but I found it to be too difficult for me. I became very anxious when it’s about time to send loving-kindness to the person I have difficult with. I chose to send loving-kindess to my recent breakup ex and I found that I was unable to do it. Unfortunately, I always ended up crying or feeling very sad after the meditation. There’s one point when I was very reluctant to meditate coz I knew what the outcome would be. So I stopped.
Anyone experienced similar situation? Any advice?
Thank you.April 9, 2014 at 7:32 pm #54584louiseParticipantHello LIz
I dont know if you are familiar with a verse in scriptuer that simply says “be still and know?”
That is all there is to meditation. Just sit quietly twice a day, thoughts will pass through your mind, just allow them to flow by without falling into them.
thats my meditation that IAm sharing.
It is my spiritual journey.louise

April 25, 2014 at 3:52 pm #55384leeza donatellaParticipantHi:
It sounds like you are new to meditation and there has certainly been a lot of great advice already provided, but I wanted to weigh in since what I am going to say, may help someone else who may still be struggling. I have been successful instructing people who have a hard time meditating, so let me just say this. It is normal to get distracted every 5-20 seconds when you meditate. Your mind wanders and thinks about a host of things. And this happens to people who have been meditating for years. What changes is the recovery time, noticing the distraction and getting back on point of becoming calm. Sure you can meditate to a visual or a sound, mantra, etc., but the best mediations performed are ones that go deep into the cellular level to rid us of the muck that has become trapped in the deepest layers of our being. For this it’s just you in a darkened room with nothing but your breath. Feeling your breath at the opening of the nostrils and going back to that nostril location every time you’re distracted proves to be such an intense meditation, it will have you floating as you eliminate the muck, that is stuck. Hope that helps.

April 26, 2014 at 1:38 pm #55409maderaParticipantI Can only tell you mine. It is simple and has changed my life.
I just sit quietly for about 20 minuets, allowing my thoughts go by until a moment of silence.
That moment ls the moment of new insight. It is a Judeo christian meditation.
