When the Roman soldiers were just about to hammer a nail into Jesus’ hand, Jesus said “Hey could you be careful with those nails? My carpal tunnel syndrome might flare up again!”

Now, were you offended by that joke? Are you Christian and offended by that joke? Or is it just a weak joke? 🙂

Is it OK to make jokes about religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam? At what point is it offensive? Where do you draw the line?
Although not a practising Christian, I consider myself a believer in Jesus Christ and the existence of God. At the same time, one of my favourite movies is the Life of Brian, by Monty Python. It was refreshing! Jesus was made to look more human. This is a problem for those of us who were grew up in Christian schools. Jesus was perfect and being a good Christian not a laughing matter! Surely Jesus shared jokes with his family and friends. Even enjoyed some crude humour!
The last scene in Life of Brian is Eric Idle singing “always look on the bright side of life”, whilst hanging on a cross. Not only hilarious but a good message, in my view. But I’ll wager some people were offended by that scene.

    Dear Jack:

Look at the bright side of life said to Jesus on the cross is horrendous and hilarious at the same time, and it makes a good point. People who say it so often should stop saying it so often… look at the bright side. Sometimes there isn’t.

The original joke about the carpal tunnel is more about my hypochondria than Christianity. But I guess people who have really suffered a tortured life, don’t find hypochondria jokes funny.

Life is supposed to be fun, everything should be made fun of.

When you start taking life too serious is the moment you let suffering into your life. People get offended by jokes is because they have created an identity out of something they are not. Making jokes of people’s self defined identity can make them defensive and hostile, but don’t delude yourself into thinking you are some saint just because you “respect” people by not making jokes about their insanity. All you do is keep feeding their delusions.

We all have to let go of our delusions eventually, even if it takes death to get us there.

    Dear Jack:

I knew at one point what carpal tunnel syndrome is about but didn’t remember when I read your joke. I miss the humor in a lot of jokes because of this or that detail I forgot or did not compute. I am humor challenged. I do appreciate you causing me to smile as often as you have. I got your inner selves humor very much and it was as funny as hell.

Which makes me think, where does this term come from: as funny as hell. Where is hell connected with humor, being funny. Okay, hell being the farthest as possible from being a funny place. So,.. humor escapes me!

funny as hell but I hope I never find out if it is actually funny there. I always imagined hell as bloody hot. Nice in winter but unbearable in summer.. 🙂

Just call me Saint Jack from now on. 🙂
If I remember correctly, some Muslims didn’t like the Charlie Hebdo French journalists satire of their God. Sometimes it is wise not to deliberately upset people.

I hope to be like Bob Hope, as I near death. Apparently he was asked towards the end of his life where he’d like to be buried. He answered “surprise me!”

    Dear Saint Jack:

Got the last joke. I heard a joke yesterday, a joke that was not funny and yet I remember it, probably because it was not funny. SO there is is: why did the lifeguard not save the hippie that was drowning in the ocean?
Because he was too far off.

Now this is not funny, yet I got nothing else, except for a horse goes into a bar and the bartender asks: why the long face?

Yes, Jack, too far out. My English, yes, my English. Too far out.

I am smiling at this moment, first time this morning. I guess all it takes is a five word post from you!

It is always a poor taste to make fun of religion. It’s wickedness and immaturity. And not as funny as it seems.
Some things are sacred. You must respect what is sacred for others even if there’s nothing sacred for you
