Great to have these forums on TB!

I’ve had a recent insight in my life. For a long, long time I have sought the approval of my older and very disinterested brother. For whatever reason, we have never connected and have little contact with each other. Yet, I have tried and tried over the years to impress him, be friends with him, hope that we can act like “brothers” (we are acting like a lot brothers, of course).

At any rate, I have realized that seeking the approval of someone who will never approve is the SAME THING as seeking rejection!

With that realization I let it all go. I am more free to be me without trying to impress him. I can let him do whatever with his life without pretending to be interested. We aren’t close. Trying to be close with him is a big set up for rejection. I have experienced it too many times now not to call a spade a spade.

Are you seeking rejection from anyone?

What an excellent insight and post. You are absolutely spot on when you say that seeking approval from someone who will never approve is the same thing as seeking rejection. I am glad you have finally been able to move on.

Thank you Mike for your open sharing! That’s so true!

While I am not searching for rejections, I noticed I am sometimes searching for challenging situations. I prefer goals which are outside my “comfort zone”. I guess balancing challenging situations with just taking the low-hanging fruits is one of the steps we need to take to grow 🙂

    Peace,

    Hey Mike,

That sounds like an incredible epiphany. I agree that trying to seek approval from someone who won’t give it to you is the same as seeking rejection; it’s definitely something I’ve experienced in the past too. It can be really difficult to let go of the myths we have around certain relationships and what we want them to be vs. the reality of what they actually are, but it’s so liberating.

The only person you should get approval from is yourself 🙂
