I am 24 year old working woman from India, i live with my parents and i have a boyfriend. We met each other 3 years ago and we both are still going strong and happy against all the odds in a relationship. I belong to a very orthodox family and my parents are extremely unhappy with my relationship as my boyfriend and i are of different castes and for my parents their daughter getting married to a different caste guy is a sin and they are afraid they might have to face the society. Its difficult for me to get my mind off the person i love as we both have decided to marry each other in couple of years down the line. However, my parents want me get married right away and leave the house and my boyfriend lost parents and has a brother to look after and he says he needs at least of two years to settle down and take the marriage responsibility which for me is correct! My question is how do i handle and make my parents understand about all this and also i have a bad career right now I am going through a great emotional turmoil. Let me know how can i makes things clear and easier for everyone and i definitely want my marriage to be a peaceful one ( which makes everyone happy) !

And reading the posts from Tiny buddha strengths me and make me feel like a more responsible person.

Thanks for reading this long post ! 🙂

    Hi Madhuri,

I just read through your post, and I felt compelled to respond because my heart goes out to you. I don’t know much about what it’s like with the caste system, so it’s hard for me to advise you. I hope someone else in the community will be able to offer some advice from experience. I know you mentioned that your parents want you to leave the house. Is it more that they want you to get married now, or that they want you to move out? Do most women leave the house only when they get married there? Is there someone else you could live with while you wait for your boyfriend to be ready for marriage? Do people do that where you live?

I’m glad the post have strengthened you!

    Lori,

Thanks for the reply ! 🙂 My parents want me to move away from home after getting married either to the guy of my choice or either their’s . They don want me to live alone unmarried in a paying guest accommodation. Most of my friends live with their parents its quite uncommon that kids especially girls move away from home unmarried. Pretty tied up and lot of restrictions i know. I cant push my guy into the marriage so early we both are 24. I have asked my guy to call up and talk to my father and get 2 years of time. Hope this one works, as this is the last straw. !
