Lately I have been rethinking my life purpose. I have recently been caught up in a wave of hedonism. My personal life mostly revolved around good food, good drink, and good sex. I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with those things in moderation, but lately it has led me to start feeling a kind of emptiness in my existence.

I started realizing I needed to rethink my life purpose, and I have spent some time doing that work. This work has led me to the realization that I needed a higher life purpose, but it wasn’t immediately clear to me what that was. But I think I have it now. It’s very simple, probably even silly sounding, and yet it makes a lot of sense to me.

My purpose on this Earth is to do my best to increase the amount of love in the world.

Even in the smallest ways. Selfless, compassionate love. The kind of love that truly puts other people first. The kind of love where you don’t need or expect anything back.

How will I actually manifest this? There are some ways I am working on. Being a more present friend and family member. Donating money to causes I believe in. Meditating. Volunteering.

Food and alcohol and sex will still play a role in my life. There’s nothing wrong with pleasure. Yet, for me, pleasure isn’t enough anymore. I need something more fulfilling.

Anyway, this stuff has been on my mind a whole lot lately and I just wanted to share my thoughts and current experience.

Has anyone else gone through a similar realization / mental transformation?

Brian, it might sound very silly as is but the state you are in is probably one of the best feelings ever. The moment when food, drink, and sex make us feel like “yes, now what?” is when you should realize that you are here for a greater reason. I’m glad you are already on the right path. However, this affinity towards greater good has to manifest in more than one ways. I have a couple of questions for you before we continue:

    • Have you ever felt people around you are being super silly at almost all times and aren’t able to live life peacefully? and does it bother you?
    • You said you tried mediating and volunteering, was there a purpose you were searching for when you were trying?
    • What was the last thing you remember you did which felt fulfilling?
    • The mental transformation, are you feeling it or constantly thinking about it?

I ask you these questions as I was sailing similar waters a while ago and I think I may have a suggestion on how to feel content in times like these.
