    Hello,

    I am 21 years old. I was on a crew (rowing) team for a while, but I wasn’t very good. I wasn’t very athletic most of my life. I have a strong desire to find a fun sport and stick to it. I want to build endurance and push myself. I’m not sure what to try. Any advice? I think physical challenge may help me overcome mental challenges as well. I feel like i’ve given up on a lot of things, but now I really want to stick to something long enough to get good at it. I want something to be passionate about, but I don’t know what I like or how to start?

    Hi Annie,

    My “un-athletic” nephews have had tremendous success with Fencing! A perfect combination of skill and endurance! They both made it to the State level!

    I, also “un-athletic”, have had a great time learning Krav Maga and Boxing (with standing pads and a partner doing sequencing).

    I am convinced that everyone has their sport. Just “shop around” until you find something you LOVE. Being good at it doesn’t matter in the first year, but as long as you love it, that love will get you through to an intermediate level, IMHO.

    P.S. Crew is murder on the back. Don’t feel bad. My DD has a bulging disk I believe because of it!!

    Hi!

    Quickly about myself: I played high school soccer, I wasn’t very good. I was slow, and yes maybe a little un-athletic.

    In college I was a couch potato, really had no passion, played video games and drank a bit and smoked weed.

    I graduated, and then I didn’t have any goal to complete so I thought hmmm…maybe I can run a marathon.

    THAT WAS THE SINGLE GREATEST THOUGHT I EVER HAD. My entire life has changed. I don’t smoke any more, and the drink, well, at least I don’t have a beer gut! There is a peace felt when running that is hard to describe. I am now 30, in the best shape of my life, and fitness has really become my passion, I’ve made some great friends because of it, and my activities include running, crossfit, and rock climbing.

    So cut to the chase, my recommendation is RUN!

    Hello Inky,

    Hmm, I am not sure if fencing is for me, but if I ever get the opportunity in life then I will definitely try it out. Wow, now boxing sounds awesome. That is something I would definitely love to learn. I will look into it and see if there is anywhere I can learn for cheap. You are right, finding something that I love may definitely help me stick to it. I also have a tendency to give up once i’m not doing well. I got pretty far this year, but to be more realistic I was up against people who have been athletic their whole lives and it just isn’t the same. Must find something at my level/ beginner.

    Hi Stephen, I’m glad you found something and it opened up other possibilities for you. You sound to be doing very well. Beer guts are not the most attractive, at least to me. Haha I run here and there, but haven’t been near a gym recently. I would love to try rock climbing. I know there are kiddy places with rock walls and stuff where I can start. Other than that, It will be a bit more difficult to find places/ people to climb with.

    I could suggest so many things, but I’m a little crazy and they’re probably not very safe. 🙂 However, I would differently say rock climbing, if you live in an environment where you can actually climb. This will get you out into nature more often and will help you relax. Climbing gyms are a great starting point, but you’ll have to actually climb some rock walls every once in a while. You could also try Bouldering. This might be a bit more accessible if you don’t live close to mountains.
