I’m just not a film buff at all. I’m not really fussed about the latest Hollywood blockbusters, the latest action-packed film with lots of CGI special effects or comedies. But that’s just me!

I love watching those low-budget made-for-tv films which are often broadcast on Horror Channel, Movies 24 or the True Movies channel. That’s just the kind of thing I like!

I love films like Ghost World, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, St Elmos Fire.

I love watching rubbishy B-list low-budget horror movies just to shriek with laughter at the absurdity of the terrible acting, dark humour and special effects. Elvira Mistress Of The Dark is one of my favourites, and The Addams Family movies also appeal to my sometimes morbid sense of humour!

But that’s about it! I told you, I’m not much of a film buff!

What are your favourite movies? Do you have a particular preference for one genre of film? What films do you dislike? Is there a movie that you are really looking forward to? Do you have any movies you could recommend for somebody who isn’t really much of a film buff (like me?)

    Dear J (not Joe…I suppose):

One film that came to my mind lately is Unforgiven, maybe the only Western I like. I used to like psycho horror movies, starting with the original Psycho and on to such movies as Fatal Attraction, The War of the Roses and others. Also otherwise horror movies. That was before I became more aware of my horrifying life story and now I am interested in calming movies. Or at least not horrifying movies.

Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind 🙂 One of Jim Carry’s very few serious roles, and very well done in my opinion.

    To answer your questions:

    1. I watch lots of movies, so I’ll just give you the top five. Mean Girls, Slumdog Millionaire, West Side Story, Jackson 5: An American Dream, and finally, Persepolis.
    2. For a particular preference, I love romantic comedies, basically any love movie. I love anime, Japanese animation too, but those are shows. So animated movies are good too. I also love movies that have a lot of diversity.
    3. The films I dislike are The English Patient,( I was dying of boredom watching that since it was 3 hours long,) The Notebook, (I know every female loves that movie, but it’s a little melodramatic for someone who’s a woman myself and it’s just depressing), and the Twilight movies. That franchise just sends the WRONG MESSAGES to females who are in relationships.
    4. I really want to see Deadpool, but since you said you’re not much a film buff and not into blockbusters, I can’t recommend that to you. But it’s a superhero movie, if you like those. I also would recommend The Stoning of Soraya M., Scent of a Woman, and The Godfather.

I love anime too! I am a huge fan of Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and pretty much anything in the Studio Ghibli series. I used to be in charge of ordering the films for the kids film club at the library where I work and I used that as an excuse to make them watch Studio Ghibli movies!

    What are your favourite animes?

Mean Girls is my guilty pleasure, I have to confess.

Walking life, its an animated philosophical documentary that shows different schools of thought, not every scene of the movie is as enjoyable as the next, some may be over the line to bullshit but there are definitely some wisdom to be learned here too! Everything stands on how you are able to percieve it

I also like Judd Apartows comedys, its interesting to watch as humour is such a big part of our daily life how realistic and humanly intellectual the movies are, i especially like the 40 year old virgin because of this and because much of the movie is improvised and its makes it even more unbelivably belivable haha!

And Frank (2014) which is a music (spacey rockish/actually awsome) dark comedy where almost the entire movie + song scenes are filmed in one take which really sets the atmosphere, its about a wannabe musician that you have too feel kind of sorry for that accidently agrees to play keyboard in a band after their keyboard player has attempted sucicide and get stuck with them on cabbin to record an album. This is also a very humane and real movie, acted out with real emotions and som real and funny music

And have you seen the Office? Its a comedy series with Steve carell, its fantasticly obsurd

Sorry for all the comedy but you should try them to see if you like them

I haven’t seen The Office (both the US and UK versions) – I believe the series you are on about – the Steve Carell version was a remake from the British series with Ricky Gervais. I will have to give it a go at some point.

I’m really glad you brought up comedy as a conversation topic! Being British, I have the typical British humour – really dry, deadpan, sarcastic, horrible…Anything with Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders is guaranteed to bring me out in hysterical laughter – I recommend that everybody watch French and Saunders, it’s an old sketch-based comedy show and they have done hilarious parodies of films and music videos.

I do love American sitcoms as well – I thought Arrested Development was absolutely hilarious! I also enjoy watching Roseanne, Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm In The Middle, The Middle, The Big Bang Theory and of course, who doesn’t love Friends?

One of my top favorite films is – Dil se..(1998)

Preity Zinta did such a beautiful job and was incredible in that movie with Khan, I love her, she’s one of my favorite actors now. I love watching her lip sync and dance in Jiya Jale, the scenery, waterfalls, rainbow and location made that part of the movie perfect. I still watch the music video a few times a week. Moulin Rouge (2001) is another one of my top favorites, as Nicole Kidman’s performance/acting blew me away, another Bollywood inspired movie that I believe Baz Luhrman copied from Dil se… although the story line is very similar and yet setting is altered. Still the same kind of love story. The costumes, props, sari’s, Indian head pieces and props were amazing as well. My Life with Nicole Kidman and Michael Keaton is another one of my favorite movies too.
