I fear my death, but that already happened: before I was conceived I was NOT, just as after dying I will be NOT. What I fear: my non existence already happened. Isn’t it a delusion to think it didn’t?

I fear being rejected. I know how being rejected feels and I fear feeling… because as it is fresh enough in my mind to fear, it is also fresh enough so I am still feeling it, present tense.

Everything I fear in life already happened, this is why I fear those things: I fear feeling pain and hurt if this or that will happen but I know pain and hurt because I already felt it when this and that happened. And pain and hurt are fresh in my mind because I am still feeling these that I fear.

    What do you think?

I fear your writing is better than mine.
Makes me look like a superficial mickey mouse.

We all fear no longer BEING and yet it already happened: we were not before, for thousands of years, from the beginning of time, we were not.

Christians can’t handle this truth so they invent heaven and hell: our bodies will die but we will keep living as spirits in heaven. Jehovah Witnesses can’t handle this truth so they took the invention of non death a step further: we will keep this body forever (and this body will get younger and younger and healthy forever more). Hindus can’t handle this truth and they invented reincarnation: we will re-appear and re-appear and never die. Be it as a mouse or a butterfly, but we will live!

No longer BEING was not that bad before I was born. It will be equally not as bad after I die.

Anita – this is an interesting way to put it – “I fear my death, but that already happened: before I was conceived I was NOT, just as after dying I will be NOT. What I fear: my non existence already happened.”

I feel this way too – that my death has already happened, but my reaction is the opposite of yours – I don’t feel fear of it. I might be naive, but I can honestly say I’ve never feared it so far – I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I wonder if people don’t fear death so much as dying?

As for your other comment about religious people not being able to handle the truth, I don’t know enough about other religions, nor am I religious, but the philosophy behind reincarnation in Hinduism and Buddhism is not to “never die” but to transcend the endless birth-and-death cycle.

But you’re right – no matter which way you look at death, no one truly knows it until they experience it – until then it’s only a belief 🙂

I’ll admit a prejudice of mine. I can’t fathom atheism. Anita please don’t take offence here. But I find atheism such a nihilistic, negative philosophy. It’s like “I believe in non-belief”. Similar to those evidence-based sceptics who will only trust what they see. How unimaginative! Religion is a belief in something not right in front of us. Something we can’t prove scientifically. We have to go beyond our limited rationialist left-brain thinking. We have to admit we don’t know it all. We need to trust there is a higher power that does know it all and seek its help in living this life.
    there endeth the lesson. 🙂
just hope this thread doesn’t divide us, not my intention.

    Dear Jack:

This thread is not going to divide us! I do believe there is a LOT in and out there beyond what I (or any scientist) can see, hear, smell, touch, taste and measure. And deduct scientifically. There are probably, maybe forms of energy not discovered yet. The thing is I believe the bible does not give me the information that is impossible, really, to know. I know where the info is NOT. I also know my lower, left side has been giving me hell for five days now. And as much as I would like to believe praying about it will help, I know it will not. I know there is no Good Man in the sky listening.

there may be many souls on earth sending you positive energy……or wishing because u helped them with a kind word, they knew now what they say to you.
personally I picture myself holding you and rocking you like a child then I start laughing cuz u do not know me or my intent and that probably would freak you out to read……then I think……. she hurts but I made her run fast away.
I hope you have a sense of humor.

    Dear Seaisland:

I didn’t understand everything in your post but when I read “rocking you like a child” with no context, the image, I felt good, very much liking it. Oh, I could use that kind of rocking right now.

Everyone seeks purpose in life and knowing that there is a maker and that everyone exists for a reason gives people a shot of optimism. I am not here to judge atheists, but I don’t know how they live their lives knowing that they’re nothing but space dust and when they’re gone… they’re just gone. That’s pretty tough. Aside from that I’ve experienced things in my life that just don’t look like coincidences no matter how you twist and turn them… Things that make me wonder if i were being helped by something.

    Dear Seaisland:

What an interesting username: sea is land. Would you like to share its meaning for you?

Rocking is good. Absolutely, an automatic comforting imagery. No need to joke in fear of being misunderstood, just be sincere and express yourself clearly and honestly and it will be fine with me!

    Dear Jack:

No, it will not divide us as far as I am concerned, for crying out loud. As far as i am concerned, nothing will. Whatever unites us, yes. Absolutely. I have your best interest in mind and you have my best interest in mind and that unites us, I believe! And yes, I said believe, and you can type god with a capital letter.

    Dear TriangleSun:

I am not one to try and take away from people what comforts them. I do know fear and do understand efforts to find comfort. I figure, about the after death thing, that it is not such a terrible thing, a tragedy, to die. If it was it wouldn’t happen so often, in nature, every day, just business as usual. What happens after death? I don’t know but it is probably not a bad thing. It is the fear of it that cripples.

    thanks for asking

-no man is an island, a beautiful favorite clique that means we are all connected

Seaisland —sea island -there are more than one hundred sea islands on the coast between Fla and Georgia, I live in the lowcountry on one of the many islands and have lived and worked on others. I realized when I was in my 30’s I never wanted another job that had me heading toward town–I wanted to go toward the water, it brings me comfort regardless of how the work day went, I could maintain with a view.

Sea is land– for me personally I am more stable/happy with the tidal water than the concrete world, I keep up with tide much more than clock time.

I hope your day is beautiful.

Its all about time – Anita is right – without her remembrance of the past – she’d have no fear. She’s afraid because there’s a memory of a past fear projected through the present into the future. By living wholly in the present moment with as much consciousness as one can muster, the fear is not actually there. Fear is one of those guttural reactions that is difficult to get rid of, but it requires thought to have it. Over thinking is the problem. Emotions start as thoughts. Stop the thoughts and the emotion goes.
Of course other emotions can swamp out fear, as in ‘perfect love casts out all fear’, and this is the so-called ‘easy route’ according to certain religions (the love route), but the fear can equally be simply removed by not thinking, which is more of a ‘difficult route’ requiring rationality and effort. A number of religions and branches of religions are attractive to people because they typify the ‘easy route’ – most people have some experience of love and other emotions, but less people have experience of the use of rational logical thought. Therefore, in order to help the most people and to appeal to the most people and to be understood by most people, many religions have the emotional route (Love the lord thy God, etc.). However, this approach doesn’t always suit everyone. Whether religious or not, it doesn’t matter, what matters is to understand where emotions come from, how they are used, and where thought comes from, and how thoughts form emotions. The mind, and its thoughts, moves very quickly. Watch it and find where the thoughts originate – there’s no fear there.
