Ariel and the Fourth Quarter
What is mind?
For a while there was a watcher watching. Then the watcher became part of what was being watched, dissolving into presence. A transparent word without opposite… Like eternal. Like love. Like forgiveness… Words that serve their purpose and then ask to be laid down. Signs along the road…
In the quiet, Ariel appeared, a quality of being. Light. Receptive. Unbound.
And I wondered how something so free becomes woven into habit, memory, fear, and identity. How the open sky narrows itself to a single window and forgets the horizon beyond.
Yet perhaps forgetting is not a mistake. Perhaps freedom is curious. Perhaps it delights in taking on form, losing itself within the game, and then awakening to what it was all along.
The old dance of remembering and forgetting.
The tide coming in.
The tide going out.
Now, in the fourth quarter of life, the entanglement remains, but it is gentler. The knots have not vanished, but they no longer demand to be untied.
I think of Prospero standing at the end of the play, his magic spent, his book set aside, his staff broken. After a lifetime of effort to command and control, he stands simply as a man, asking to be released.
It moves me more than it once did. There is a humility in that moment. A willingness to stop managing the mystery. To allow what is free to be free. To let Ariel return to the elements. To let the wind return to wind. To let the sea return to the sea… and to discover that what remains, when the need to possess the moment falls away, is not despair at all, but a quiet bow before the life that was never ours to hold…
And to hear, somewhere beyond the need to understand, a quiet invitation: celebrate me home.
