40 Ways to Live Life Without Regrets

No regrets

“The saddest summary of life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have.” ~ Unknown

We all have something stored in our memory banks of the past that we wish we could have done differently, or something we wish we didn’t do.

As we get older we learn and grow, but that doesn’t mean we have to regret what we did before we learned how to do things differently. If we didn’t go through those experiences, we might not have grown into the strong and knowledgeable people we are today.

What I’m proposing is that we get rid of the negative thoughts—the could haves, might haves, and should haves—and start living a life that won’t make us feel regretful. Not even at an older, wiser age.

Here is a list of things you can do to practice living life with no regrets:

1. Realize that it’s okay to make mistakes. Just make sure to learn from them, forgive yourself, and move on.

2. Make your health and wellness a top priority and always take care of yourself so you’re ready to take care of others.

3. Follow your own path, not one that others want you to follow.

4. Find the humor in life and laugh like there is no tomorrow.

5. Relax and move with the flow of life by being unafraid of change.

6. Be adventurous by trying new things and taking more risks.

7. Have more intellectual curiosity and embrace creativity.

8. Try to find happiness with as many different people as you can.

9. Think for yourself instead of letting other people’s opinions influence you too much.

10. Try not to judge people before you get to know them.

11. Be thankful for what you have now instead of thinking about what you don’t have.

12. Wish well upon everyone equally and try to admire without envy.

13. Share your happiness with others instead of hoarding it all for yourself.

14. Don’t try to change someone—love who they are now.

15. Enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

16. Know that happiness is bigger than any bank account.

17. Control negative thoughts so that they don’t contribute to the outcome of your life.

18. Use your energy wisely because spending energy complaining, worrying, or being impatient is just wasted energy.

19. Be bold. Find the courage to change things that should be changed and accept that there are some things that cannot be changed.

20.Love your work. If you don’t currently love what you do, figure out what you would love and take the first step toward that life.

21. Turn your discontent into a mystery and enjoy trying to solve it.

22. Face problems from different angles in order to find solutions.

23. Gain independence by realizing that on this earth we are all dependent upon each other.

24. Change your perspective by taking on a wider view of things.

25. Don’t waste time trying to bring disagreeable people around to liking you.

26. Become the person you would like to spend the rest of your life with.

27. Be honest with yourself and others by saying what you mean and meaning what you say.

28. Treat people with respect and compassion.

29. Live in the now by loving the present and being aware of your thoughts and actions. Think happy thoughts and speak powerful words.

30. Try not to put things off until later.

31. Never hold grudges.

32. Face your fears head on and try to do the things that you think you cannot do.

33. Spend time with people who make you happy while also not depending on other people for your own happiness.

34. Stand up for yourself and others and don’t let anyone or anything hold you back.

35. Be yourself and love who you are now.

36. Be a participant in life rather than an observer.

37. Do the things that you love to do as much as you can.

38. Write out a list of goals and achieve them by doing them step by step. Don’t give up when things get difficult.

39. Do something every day that makes you feel proud of yourself—commit random acts of kindness whenever you get the chance.

40. And always keep on moving forward.

I know it seems like a rather large list of things to take on, but you can accomplish a lot on this list by doing just one thing. For example, right now as I’m typing this I’m putting into practice at least eighteen things.

Put these things into practice and see where life takes you, without regrets. And please comment below. I’d love to read your thoughts on this.

Not really a tip of living without regret but a tip none the less:
I've started building a “Life Binder”, it's a binder of daily to-do lists, blank paper for notes/sketches, and other goodies. I've printed this and included it.

“Try to find happiness with as many different people as you can.”

How do you “find happiness”? What constitutes as “happiness”? I don’t understand this. I don’t think we can “find happiness”. Where does it come from?

Great list of ways to life happily, I like all of them but at some point we do regret but its part of life, its said true keep people and love ones happy.

  • http://empathsolutions.com/ removing negative energy

This is something that is really very inspiring. This can also help people to be positive in living their lives.

  • Anonymous

Living in the past should not hinder a person to move on to the future. It is okay to commit mistakes as this would definitely provide you the experience and learning that you can use as you continue with your life. But having regretful is not advisable. This negative thoughts should be converted into a positive thinking. People do make mistakes. the difference is the attitude towards it.

I think every person who is struggling with something in their life is aware of this list. If it were as easy as reading it and trying to apply it, people wouldn’t be unhappy or searching for help. Not one thing on the list was news to me.  However, not one thing on the list has helped put the hurt behind me…not yet anyways. Before someone criticizes me, its not for lacking of trying. Trust me, feeling this hurt is not something I cherish. I try everyday to let go and live life to the fullest. I have yet to make much headway.  I will keep trying. I just wish it was as simple as making, reading and following lists.

  • http://twitter.com/lori_deschene Lori Deschene

    Hi Laura,

My name is Lori, and I run this website. Though I didn’t write this post, I felt compelled to reach out to you. I know that a list like this can seem really trite when you’re dealing with internal and external resistance. It’s all so much more complex than any one list, blog post, or even book possibly cover.

I think that our struggles are rarely about lack of knowledge; they’re about limitations that make it hard to apply it. I know that feeling of frustration I (think I) sense in your comment. I hope you’re being patient and kind to yourself. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sometimes I don’t realize in the moment how much progress I’m making. It’s quite possible you ARE living life to the fullest…you just haven’t realized yet that this is a necessary part of your journey.

    Much love,
    Lori

Wow this is so perfect. Exactly what I was looking for I’m going into my senior year of high school and sometimes just feel disapointed in myself. Bcuz I don’t really try new things and I’m not very adventourous I guess you could say and I feel like life is really picking its pace up so I just feel like I’m living my life with regrets so number 32 is something I’m going to try my hardest to correct, and I love hearing you should “live your life to the fullest” I never quite knew how to do so but this article says it all I’m printing this and hanging it on my wall. Reading this was refreshing, thank you:)

thank you..i have been a negative child since i was 9..and i didnt enjoy my childhood life..it was messed up..but after reading motivational books i have changed completely..the list above is wonderful thank you for sharing!

  • nathan

This is awesome. I’m going to be a sophomore in college and find this a challenging and creative way to go about self improvement. For all those that have droids, i would suggest downloading “days matter” by zuomj and setting a different number for each day and trying to accomplish one, or at least think of it, everyday and repeating for every 40 days. time consuming, but i’m really looking forward to trying some of these out. Good luck everyone!

Laura sometimes we choose to live in pain, sure, if u have  been through hard situation is ok to hurt, but know that you have to power to snap out of that pain, whatever happened to un is not happening anymore and if it is happening cut it off. Just choose to be happy and end whatever it is that is hurting you. The past is no more

awesome…….really you have done a gr8 job in writing this and i really think if someone actually follows these things his/her life  ll b gr8……no doubt its difficult to start with but i guess it ll b fruitful once one dedicate oneself to it.  there is one question i wish to ask that what should one do to avoid the influence of some regretful people in life so that they dont make your life hell anymore????

  • Katdj_c

thank you for this gift. like you, as i slowly and mindfully go through each item in the list, i realize that i am already practicing many of the points you have shared. i am glad. i am thankful. the challenge now is to widen and try to make our practice more consistent and sustained, so pretty soon, all 40 in the list are woven seamlessly into our lives. i also note that sometimes, in another context, maybe there will be slips. that is okay too. but it is good to catch ourselves when we slip so we can get right on track. again…salamat (that’s filipino for thank you!). namaste!

  • Katdj_c

    dear laura,

i only read this now, and your post was up some three months back…

i know facing pain in our lives is hard. no one seeks to have pain, but when it is there, it is there for a reason. for our growth. this is a hard pill to swallow. but life is where we grow, and we grow in both the highs and low points in our lives. understandably, it is the happy, joyful moments that we want more of. but we’d rather not have the painful ones. like i said, though we do not create pain, when they are there, they are like friends who bring hard message/s about ourselves that we need to be aware of.

sit with your pain. listen to it. be open to the message of growth, your growth, that they bring — what do these painful things tell you about yourself. when we have gotten the point or lesson of why we have these pains, surprisingly, they go away. so in dealing with pain in our lives, it is best not to run or make them just disappear. talk to it, make friends with it, listen. ..

    blessings to you laura.

It’s been 10 yrs and I’m engaged to a very loving man, but until now my biggest regret is allowing myself to be manipulated by a pervert, my first bf. He manipulated me to have sex with him, after having me, he treated me like a shit, like a whore. I shouldn’t have said yes to him in the first place. In the second place, I shouldn’t have stayed w/ him for that long. He was able to use me 8 rounds total until he was the one who broke up with me. I shouldn’t have hang on to him just because “something happened” to us. I clinged on to him because he took away my virginity, totally wrong, Now I tell myself. I shouldn’t have done it at all..or after the first time and his true color showed I should have left. I even allowed it to happen 7 more rounds after the big regret 1st time. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t stay because I enjoyed sex. I didn’t at all. He used to complain how dry I was..and I was on prozac then. My biggest regret of all is that my very loving fiancee is very conservative. He would have jumped for joy knowing that he was my first.

just forget about them, stop thinking about them, they aren’t worth it. you don’t need them to be happy, you can be happy yourself, it’s best to close the chapters of yesterday and live in the present and the near future. talking from experience, it takes time, but can be achieved.

  • jfkdal

Hi…your friend doesn’t have one post on her blog.

  • Daniel

I used to be that great person that always put everybody else needs above him self and I like to believe that I still am. One day I decided I want to change my life and worked hard on what I loved rather than what was expected of me. However I get the feeling that some people look down on you once you’re doing better than them. Some of the tips are about respecting others, but I just get the feeling that this is not a two way street.

When I married to my husband I was already pregnant and so I didn’t have a job. He had a really good job though so I was able to

stay home and take care of our son when it was born. When we had our second child we moved to a bigger house, but then

strange things started to happen. Things would fly off the walls and doors would slam at night. Our oldest son talked about seeing

figures and hearing voices. We consulted a medium and they said the house was haunted. After living there about a year more

with only minor occurrences we moved out. That was when the bad luck started to happen. Everything started to fail, with my

husband’s job, our money and our luck in general. I went back to the same medium and they told me that a spirit had followed me

and placed a curse upon me for disturbing it and not being respectful in the previous house. He tried to remove it but was unable.

The misfortune kept going on and getting more severe as I tried to search out someone to break the curse. But when I found

freemercytemple@yahoo.com he finally did it. Things started turning around almost immediately after he cast the spell and have

been great from there! This was really a miracle for us, thank you Dr. Messiah from the bottom of my heart!

hey my names alaina, and i really would like to thank you so much for posting this article, in all honesty ive been going through alot of stuff right now and it may not seem like a big deal to some but it is to me i am 17 and have been very depressed during this summer and have always tryed to act happy but it just recently got out of hand when i took the quote live free with no regrets into my own hands, i have caused myself alot more stress than ive had before and now im realizing that avoiding my actions and mistakes is not the way to do things at all. Reading this has helped me try to regai some strength to become a better person and set goals for myself so again i thank you for posting this very much.

  • Karolina47

Reading this gave me a new perspective on life and myself, I used to always focus on the wrong things which most of the time would make me unhappy with what kind of person I am and the life I lead. This made me realize that dwelling on the things I don’t have or find hard to accept was the reason I was upset all the time and I bet I gave that vibe off to the people I surrounded myself with, which can’t be a good thing, maybe it even put them off me. I’m going to try and undertake one of my biggest challenges – finally accept myself and the fact that its worthless trying to be somebody else. You should have no idols to look up to and copy. Just be yourself all the time, no exceptions. Thank you so much for this inspiring article, as you can see, it totally changed me. Thank you!

I am actually astonished that I live my life by almost all of these principles. My life’s battle, however, is bipolar disorder, so the negatives hit me on their own without provocation or warning. It is my goal in life to live a life of no regrets. So many people need to see this! Sadly, so few will take it to heart. This fact breaks MY heart. I am in a waning relationship and I believe if my partner could incorporate these wise steps into his life, we would have lasted.

I think too many people are afraid of regret. It’s treated like a crippling emotion when it can actually teach us and to change accordingly. So many people espouse this “I have no regrets!” with a big smile when they haven’t accounted for any of their actions. Seems pretty superficial and shallow. I have regrets. They don’t keep me down but they do make me aware of not repeating the same mistakes.

    Otherwise good list.

A wonderful thoughtful list, thank you. I do find some humor in No. 10 … when I add to it ….Try not to judge people before you get to know them ….. do it after you know them, it can then be even more harsh …….. just joking..

I feel your struggle and I believe everyone who visits here has some type of pain and struggles with it. I once had a doctor tell me that my pain would gradually subside when I would make the effort to get involved to help others with their pain. Laura, my prayers and feelings go out to you and I hope in some way that you have in some small way progressed from this pain.
    Much Feelings for you,
    Patti

  • hunt

What I have learnt in past one year is that you shouldnt expect anything from anyone I know this is quite hard to implement this in ones own life but its a harsh fact
We humans are social beings sometime we live for ourself and sometime for others and this act of kindness living for others and expecting their care and love is what leads to isolation from the society. To lead a wonderfull and a happy life is not to expect anything from anyone just get busy by doing your own karma

  • alex

made me feel good reading this. you must be a speacial person….

  • Shefali

I completely agree with these lines on living with regrets. I am leading a life full of regrets. My list is endless, no matter how much i try, but its not easy for me to shrug these negative thoughts.

I just wrote about training for a marathon, how we’re all on a marathon, and the goal is the same as life: put one foot in front of the other, move forward, getting stronger each step of the way if you live life well and peacefully. This will be a great post to accompany that writing. Thanks!! I can’t believe you are only 21; that is fantastic! That’s a great insight that will carry you far. It took me 40 years to figure things out but I can’t go back so I keep moving forward. Peace. :)

  • Yod

I would love to read this kind of article as I have been wondering for a long time to answers myself “how we ought to live?” I’ve also wondering for a long time that where do we actually go after death and because many religions believe in tons of different ideas, so which religion is true. This article makes me feel more relaxed about my life. It makes me think that the purpose of life is to be happy, and that’s the real goal for every human being. It also makes me think that there is no reason to worry about death as long as you live. The only thing we should realize as long as we are breathing is that we are living, and the only thing we should realize as long as we are living is to try our best. This teaches me that if we can do our best then there is nothing to fear. Now I know that we should enjoy every moment of life.
Thanks for sharing some tips of how I ought to live
