How to let go when you havr nothing to hold on to? When you are in a negative vortex but you have no hope or inspiration to move away from it. Like there is no force from the back to push you forward or a force from the fron that will drag you forward. I’m trying to let go of my past but I have no hope for the future. So I’m just living within the negativity. What can I do to shift my world?

    Dear yumi:

I think it is impossible to let go when you have nothing to hold on to. If you do, you self destruct.

You want to let go of your past, but have no hope for your future. In reality, as you hold on to the past, you are living in the present. You make your present about your past, but it is still the present time. Pay attention to the present, to the here-and-now. What is happening now? What are your thoughts, feelings, sensations; what do you see, hear… what is happening around you?

You asked: “What can I do to shift my world?” My answer is: shift from past-future to the present by practicing of Mindfulness, from guided meditation to the ongoing practice of it. There are blogs on the home page of this website on Mindfulness and many other reading materials in book stores and online.

    Post again anytime.

Stay in the present. Every time you notice that you are living in the past or the future, bring yourself to the present right here right now. Do this through mindfulness. When you are aware of your thoughts, you can catch yourself before you spiral down that negative vortex. Do a physical check in.. How does my body feel? How does my breath feel? Am I relaxed? Are there parts of my body I can relax? Close your eyes… notice sounds, smells, sense of touch..

Meditation helps me let go of the past. It helps my thoughts slow down.

Meditation can help you let go of the past, but you can also create possibilities for yourself. You say you have no hope for the future, but you can create hope. What do you want to do? What kind of person do you want to become? You could make a list of things you want to change or have happen, choose the one that seems most important, and then decide on a first step you can do today. That’s progress, that’s hope. And then tomorrow you can do the next step.
