I have spent the last 9 months in a city I really wanted to be in, but I have struggled a lot also. I’ve been unemployed/unsteady work for much of the time, kind of sick, and just exhausted.

I’m going through these weird phases, but none of them feel like me. At first, I was completely burned out. My mind felt fried from trying so hard. Then, I moved to deep, dark depression. I guess I am doing better now, but I still feel numb.

My journey over the past year, like many trials & tribulations, taught me some important lessons, I’m sure. But I just feel so…confused? disconnected?

I start a new job soon, so at least I’ll be working. But inside, I just feel all jumbled up. I don’t have creativity and ideas like I used to. I just don’t feel like myself. In the past, I’ve always been working on something. I’m 23, and I feel like I have no direction.

I need help finding my energy again/remembering who I am. Does this make any sense?

    Hello Wow90,

At first I was worried that we may not be able to relate because of age differences and experiences, however, I am around the same age as you. First, I just want to say that what you are feeling is normal. As we get older and experience new things, we learn more about ourselves and our needs. Are you a spiritual or religious person?

After being burned out you became depressed. However, the events that led to the depression may not have been processed?? Is that possible. I would recommend meditation to really get in touch with your inner feelings. It’s okay to not have something to work on right now because you are still young and figuring out who you are. Once you begin to spend some time feeling and letting your thoughts be processed, you will have more clarity and may be able to find a new direction. This may just be a crossroad for you, but you need to look within to see which direction to go in. I hope this helps.

    Hi wow90,

It’s so hard to be depressed and have no direction especially after being goal-oriented and optimistic for as long as you could remember!

What I would do is revel in Routines. Find pleasure in the small things.

Wake up. Make coffee. Go to your favorite breakfast take out place. Order a different thing from the menu each day.

You will be working soon. Yay! Something to look forward to and fill your time.

Explore your block. Every lunch/afternoon go into one new store on your block.

Talk to one person you see in your building every day. The doorman only counts once. Goal: Invite a neighbor over or go out to dinner/coffee with him/her/them.

Find a church/temple/Buddhist meditation place. Do that once a week.

At night find a Netflix series to watch. Only watch one program a night. Then read only one chapter from a great book a night. This will give you something to look forward to.

    Good Luck!

    Inky
