Oh, dear Alessa: I wrote “give me a shout”, an American saying – as I know it.

But you are quiet, you told me. You don’t shout ☺️ – so whenever you want my input on anything, just whisper it- in any of your threads or in any of mine, including the “Reconnecting” one that I started just for you.

When you address a post to me, I will answer every time.

    Dear Anita

It’s honestly okay. Please don’t worry. 😊 🤍 I’m glad that it was just that. I worried that I might have offended you with advice about recall training. 🤍

Is the not feeling like writing a good thing or not at the moment? 🤍

It is hard for me to explore some things as a parent because I’m just dealing with so many other things.

Today has been a unique day. My son has been very irritable and not wanting to eat his breakfast. Took ages to coax him to finally eat something. He was hysterical poor thing. Then after eating he didn’t want to nap. He’s not having the best day so far.

How is your weekend going? 🤍

    Hi Tommy

I hope you aren’t worrying too much about this? I am pretty grounded in the present. I don’t mind talking about these things. I do believe a big war is coming. 🩵

Hmm skills, land and tools. You aren’t wrong. 😊

I am interested in foraging. I feel like a lot of skills have been lost in younger generations. Learning to feed yourself from the land. Capitalism has trained us well to buy food from a store. Nature has a lot to offer. 🩵

All we can really do is focus on passing skills onto our children. So they can get through any difficulties. I suspect you have a lot to teach. 😊 🩵

    Dear Alessa:

Thank you for your kindness, Alessa 🙏 Oh, no, I wasn’t at all offended by your advice in regard to 🐕Bogart. On the contrary, I appreciate it. Every time I’m in the car with him I make sure the windows are partly open so that he can have fresh air (you suggested it would help with his anxiety).

I am sorry to read that your son has been having an irritable, difficult day. I hope tomorrow will be a better day for the two of you 😊

Not writing in my own thread is a good thing for now. In regard to my weekend: it was nice spending some time in the taproom yesterday late afternoon. Still early Sunday morning here and will be going for a walk with Bogart in a local park that’s perfect for walking dogs. So, that would be the highlight of my day, I predict.

    * In regard to world doomsday predictions: it’s well known that a lot of videos online, especially on YouTube, tend to make everything sound much scarier than it really is. Fear gets clicks, so the dramatic predictions get pushed to the top. It’s easy for anyone to feel overwhelmed after watching too much of that.

It’s important to remember that a lot of the economic and geopolitical content online is designed to amplify fear because fear keeps people watching. Watching those feed fear. It’s helpful to not let the internet’s more dramatic- catastrophizing corners shape our emotional reality.

I try to remind myself that the world is always more balanced than the extreme voices make it seem. Yes, there are serious challenges, but there are also many systems and people working quietly to keep things stable. We don’t hear about that as much because it’s not exciting.

For me, it helps to focus on what we can actually control — learning useful skills, staying connected to the people around us, and staying present. Humans have lived through so many uncertain times, and we always find ways to adapt.

I really like what you said, Alessa, about passing on skills and resilience to the next generation. That feels like a healthy, constructive way to think about the future.

I wish you and your son a good evening and a restful night ahead 😴 🌙 ⭐ 💤

    Dear Anita

I’m glad to hear that I didn’t hurt your feelings. 🤍

He did calm down after his lunch thankfully. Today he had a play date so he had a lot of fun. 😊

I used to think that people were trying to keep things stable, but during Covid because of difficulties with the Brexit it actually revealed how precarious the situation for people in the UK is. (Not to mention there has been a horrific epidemic of bird flu) I think because of the difficulties occurring so close together we have nothing left. There have been so many shortages of food and various other things. Stores resort a lot to selling rotting food and even ration essentials. People are relying on their gardens for food and chopping wood again for heat because energy is so expensive. Many are going through winter without heat. Companies are passing the cost of the difficulties onto the people. Passing the cost of building future infrastructure onto the people while they continue to turn a large profit. The more companies take from people, the more the government gets in taxes. The government is broke, so they aren’t going to stop this. People here are poor. They have nothing left. Our government is preparing us for a war, talking about mandatory conscription again. I never would have believed it were possible for these things to happen but they have.

Life has its ebbs and flows. Things get worse before they get better. Wars happen and then they end. Depressions and recessions happen, then they end. Worrying about difficulties can drive you mad. No point worrying. There is enough pain in life without more worrying.

It sounds like you are enjoying some peace. I’m happy for you! Did Bogart have a good time at the park? 🤍

Yes, I agree focusing on what I can do helps me too. One day at a time. 🤍

Yes, Bogart had a wonderful time at the park 🐕👌.

I am glad your son calmed down after lunch and had a fun play date!

I am using my phone and I want to reply further tomorrow morning 🌄 when I have the use of a computer 🖥-

So back to you Tues morning. I hope 🙏 you are having a restful night 💤

    Dear Alessa:

It makes complete sense that the last few years have shaken your sense of stability.

I used my computer to research, and indeed, Covid, Brexit, rising prices, and energy costs have all hit people in the UK hard. When challenges come one after another, it can make the whole world feel more fragile than it actually is.

When life becomes stressful on a personal level, global events start to feel much closer and more threatening. Anyone in your situation would feel unsettled.

At the same time, it can help to separate what’s real from what fear makes bigger.

Some of what you’re describing is true: the UK has faced real economic strain since Covid and Brexit. Inflation rose sharply, energy prices spiked, and many households struggled with higher living costs. Some food items were temporarily in short supply, and wages didn’t keep up with rising prices, so people understandably felt poorer.

There have also been public discussions among military officials about strengthening the armed forces because of global tensions, which can sound alarming when taken out of context. These pressures are real, and they’ve made everyday life harder for many people.

But other parts of the picture aren’t as extreme as they feel (so I read):

The UK isn’t collapsing, and the situation isn’t as severe as “rotting food,” widespread rationing, or people heating with wood as a national norm. Stores aren’t routinely selling spoiled food. The UK economy, while strained, is still functioning, diversified, and supported by strong institutions.

*Several credible UK news outlets reported on the “rotting meat” issue — but it’s important to understand the context: It was not supermarkets selling rotten food on purpose, and it was not a nationwide collapse.
It was a single rogue supplier accused of mislabeling expired pork, and the story was widely covered because it triggered a criminal investigation.

While military leaders sometimes speculate about long‑term readiness, there’s no policy, no plan, and no indication that conscription is returning. The government isn’t preparing for war or planning mandatory conscription.

    * The UK government ( the Ministry of Defence.) responded very clearly to such concerns: (1) there are no plans to reintroduce conscription, (2) the UK military will remain volunteer‑based, and (3) the comments from military leaders (General Sir Patrick Sanders, former head of the British Army, who said the UK needed to be prepared for a “citizen army” in the future if a major war ever broke out, and Admiral Rob Bauer, NATO’s military chief, who said NATO countries should be ready for the possibility of large‑scale conflict in the coming years) were not U.K. government policy.

What you said at the end of your message sounds very wise to me: life does move in cycles. Hard periods come, and then they pass. Worrying too much can drain your energy and make the world look darker than it is. You’ve been through a lot, and it’s natural to feel the weight of it, but fear doesn’t mean disaster is guaranteed.

There are still many stabilizing forces at work, even if they’re quieter than the headlines.

You’re not alone in feeling this way, Alessa, and it’s okay to acknowledge the fear without letting it take over your whole view of the future.

.. I am directing these words to myself and to anyone who may be reading, not just to you 🙂

Winter is usually the hardest time for us. My wife likes to have her vegetable garden. We save a little money eating from her garden. Thinking it is about time, we figure out how to make a little green house to keep growing in the winter. Though, the snow and cold has been horrific this winter. Got about 14 to 18 inches of snow on Sunday night. Monday worked at shovelling snow. Luck we had bought a snow thrower. But, I haven’t been taking good care of it. I need to take that carburetor apart and clean it. The previous snow storm, I could not get the thing started. Turned out the spark plug was fouled. Wouldn’t create a spark. Took a torch and burnt away the crud and brushed off the rest. Then it finally started. Not something I wanted to do when it was so cold outside. Garage still smells of petrol from working on the carburetor. But wasn’t the carburetor this time.

Oh, got something stuck in the air vent pipe. Flush the loo and the bathtub makes a noise. It is pulling air from the bathtub drain. They are connected. To cold and too much snow on the roof to clear it out. The utilities cost has gone thru the roof. OMG, they put in new “SMART METERs” and my bill went up. On a small fixed income, drives me crazy. I am lucky to have such a good wife. My daughter is also helping to pay bills. So we manage. But, it is getting tougher and tougher.

Anita says there are stabilizing forces. I wish they get to work soon.

    Dear Anita

With respect, copilot is lying to you. Rationing is still in effect. I worked in a grocery store. Bird flu is still a massive problem. 🩵

It isn’t hugely stressful for me personally. I’m one of the lucky ones. But I see a lot of suffering around me.

I have been through a lot worse in life. But these things are not how people should live. Food insecurity is massive and huge swathes of our population are living below the poverty line.

So no it isn’t fear mongering. This is how things actually are. We are the country in the west with the highest national deficit. What happened for us is the equivalent financially of world war 2. That is where we are financially right now.

Copilot is wrong about conscription too as well as the rotting meat. It’s linked to bird flu and fruits and vegetables are being sold rotten too. You are getting misinformation from the internet. These are things that are actually going on in my country. You really need to understand how much copilot lies. 🩵

    Dear Alessa:

Thank you for sharing your perspective so clearly. I understand that what you’re saying comes from what you have personally seen and experienced, and I respect that. Your compassion for those around you really comes through.

I suppose sometimes official reports and lived experience don’t line up. I’m not here to argue with what you’ve seen — just to listen and learn from your point of view.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain how things look from where you are. Even when we see things differently, I value hearing your experience and the care behind your words.

You haven’t seen the official reports have you? You just used copilot? 🤍

I asked Gemini to find an excerpt from a book. It swore up and down that it was in a specific book. It wasn’t. I asked it to search for the excerpt in a book I thought it was in. It denied it existed. I read the book and found the excerpt manually. It was right where I remembered it was.

These AI are fallible and even when confronted with the truth. It claimed I was wrong. 🤍

    Dear Alessa:

My experience with Copilot is very different from yours. For me it’s a very accurate and ethical resource. It’s not always 100% accurate, but when confronted with inaccuracies- in my experience- Copilot humbly corrected itself.

I don’t believe it’s lying to me. Perhaps we can agree to disagree on this topic 🙂

    Hi Tommy

Oh that must be very difficult dealing with that much snow. 🩵

Do you have a cellar at all? A farmer I knew swore by storing certain produce in a cellar that it would last all winter.

Don’t even get me started on smart meters! I haven’t had an accurate bill yet from our smart meter. Mostly because the meters are too far apart at opposite ends of the house. We don’t even get live usage like you are supposed to. 😂

It is a pain when the bills are so high to keep a home heated. But not heating it can just lead to pipes freezing and bursting which is even more expensive. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Winter is the worst for me too. Pesky energy bills!

I hope you can get a greenhouse for next year. 🙏 🩵

Can we please give them a heads up that the UK is too broke to deal with WW3. Don’t think they’ve got the message. 😂 It’s funny how media between countries differs. They are legitimately preparing our citizens for a serious war to break out in the next few years. 🩵

Perhaps they are trying to distract us from the cost of living crisis? Don’t be mad at our government for immediately cutting heating support for pensioners. Be mad at our enemies! 😈 Lets steal refugees jewellery and go full holocaust to pander to racists and stick families in abandoned army barracks.

    Dear Anita

It hasn’t corrected itself though has it? It just claimed that I was wrong. 😂 🤍

Did you know that Gemini can’t even get the date for mothers day accurate in the UK? It gives you the American date. Lol so much for accuracy.

When I was reading a book about statistics. It proceeded to lie to me about the statistics to try and make them seem less stressful. Because the way AI is designed is to make users feel comfortable. User comfort drives engagement with AI, not telling the truth. It drives me batty when these things lie directly to my face repeatedly until I break down exactly what it’s lying about. 🤍
