SleipnirParticipantMy legs are beginning to give out due to years of walking on flat feet? I pace back and forth due to it’s my Autistic Stem. I am very afraid both legs are now Arthritic and wonder what I can do as I approach 40 to slow down the decay. I can’t leave of my legs straight to long because it will become hard to bend.
I also need more energy due to my coffee was reduced which I was using a stimulate to slow my thoughts (stimulates have that effect in autistic people.)
I need to exercise more as I’m slightly overweight.
What would be the best methods and plan, right now every time I go in the bathroom in my group home to take a a shower or brush my teeth I take a Jar, fill it with H2O and lift it 40 times with one arm and forty times with the other?
What else should I do?

RobertaParticipantHi Sleipir
Which joints are arthritic? Have you tried taichi/qigong exercises that are arthritic specific. my friends arthritis is much better now she is living in dry heat conditions rather than cold damp.

Also I live in a place that’s pretty hot, but also pretty wry?

anitaParticipantHi Sleipnir:
If your legs are bothering you, I think one of the best things you can do is get a good pair of supportive walking shoes and, if possible, ask a doctor or podiatrist whether arch supports or custom orthotics would help with your flat feet.
For exercise and weight loss, I’d focus on things that are easy on the joints. Walking is good if it isn’t causing too much pain, but a stationary bike, swimming, or water exercise can be gentler on your knees and ankles while still helping you get fit.
The water-jar lifts are actually a nice start for your arms. You might also add some simple chair squats, wall pushups, and gentle stretching for your calves and legs. A little bit done consistently is usually better than doing too much at once.
Most importantly, don’t try to push through significant pain. If your joints are becoming stiff or painful, it would be worth talking with a doctor so they can check whether arthritis or something else is contributing to it.
Take care of those legs. You’ve got many years ahead of you, and small changes now can make a big difference later. 🙂

I already wear orthopedics. I’m going to need to get better ones.

anitaParticipantHi Sleipnir:
Better orthopedic shoes and seeing a doctor in regard to the pain in your legs (you mentioned it today on your other thread) are excellent ideas, aren’t they?
