What is your experience with Craigslist missed connections?

I started to read it when I bought some furniture. I’ve had a couple women who were clearly messaging to me. I get the ones that read like “saw you coming out of the grocery store and I should have said hello. If you read this reply and we can have a drink sometime.”

But, why would a woman write MC posts when she already can talk with a guy on a regular basis? It seems they want to put their emotions out there anonymously, safely? But when it continues and you get the impression they are more comfortable talking to you through MC it also seems weird and possibly controlling or manipulative. Of course it can be confusing because people are anonymous.

Then I realize I’m looking at this stuff with a bit of an addiction. I want to stop reading them but it’s a curiosity about what people are writing, and “oh is that another post from her? It might be…”

It’s June 1, and you know how you start a diet on the first of the month? I want to stop going to MC. Of course those diets never worked for me – I needed exercise and a nutritional plan. … Hey do I need a better plan of some kind for relationships? I want to get away from the little but nagging part of my life that has become junk food = CL MC.

I do have a good possible relationship developing in person, without MC … and FYI any relationship I ever had before was not online it was in person.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Big blue

well, to be honest, people tend to display mild to massive addiction to some forum or the other 😛 *coughs* me included..nah, its not really a big deal – enjoy the attention but dont take it too seriously 😀 (better yet, block the site on your privacy settings if its too much of a nuisance)..Its up to you. I have another thought to share –

Have you tried Quora? Its a question-answer asking medium – you specify your interests and get to answer people’s questions, ask some publicly or anonymously. It could be anything – finance, psychology, politics, Buddhism, international relations – i got pretty addicted initially but did learn quite a bit on different topics – some answers were really well written. You can try it out 🙂

This is the site – https://www.quora.com/

Dont worry too much about this – i am sure the other users will have wonderful ideas to offer. take care!

    OMGoodness, I Love CL MC!!!

Ok, first, Craigs List is (my opinion) a smarmy side of the internet. Where common humanity gets together and can become their most basic selves.

A few years ago we were on a hunt to get a Maine Coon Cat. “Let’s try Craigs List” I said. I found it was more fun reading it than interacting with the people on it. The cat owners desperately trying to shed their cat would become paranoid. One started bullying my daughter online. Or we would have to pick the cat up in a dark alley at 10 PM in a bad city. Weird.

Missed Connections I read because it’s fun to read about strangers (who might be you!!) brushing elbows at real life places you’ve been. Or you know exactly which cute coffee barista they’re referring to! One big LOL!

Eventually the smarminess will catch up to you and you won’t be able to read one more post.

But I will read Best of Craigs List about once a year. Funny!

I didn’t know such a thing existed, and now I feel conflicted about it, and I’m not sure why 🙂

I can understand the “missing connection” type of things back then when we didn’t have the Internet or social media. It was kind of romantic then, when one would seek out a person they were longing after. I wonder why now it just feels really stalker-ish and creepy 🙂

I’m sure people haven’t changed that much, and starting to talk to a person would feel intimidating. I don’t think there’s any difference between men and women when it comes to fear of rejection. I’m sure it can feel safer to post an ad instead of really putting yourself out there. I’ve just become a bit jaded with people connecting over the Internet. It seems like some want instant gratification without any extra effort from their part. It’s pretty much the opposite of romance for me.

Also, I have to say that I really do dislike Craigslist 🙂 I can’t understand it’s appeal. It is like an ugly, old web edition of a newspaper ads column. With all the possibilities with latest web technologies, that’s what people want? Can’t stand it 🙂

Ruminant – jaded EXACTLY thank you! But the furniture part is awesome. Super deals on like new stuff.. Although this one sofa seller wanted to fix me up with her neighbor :-/
Typically people are moving and need to clear things out. Nice people.

Oh, I’m sure it is very convenient considering the content. My issue with it is purely my own fixation with how things should be done 🙂 It always perplexes me why people prefer services and tools that aren’t nearly as user friendly and up to date as some other service. Just like I’m interested in psychology in general, I’m interested in user interfaces in software and web sites, and it annoys me that I can not understand why people gravitate in masses towards websites that look horrible 🙂

Part of me really wants to go on a dating website again, even just for friendships, but I keep talking myself out of it. I think I would rather communicate with people on niche websites (like this one). It’s not just me who becomes jaded on those websites, but it’s everyone else as well, so the communication becomes very shallow and aggressive, and I don’t like that.

Yes the CL UX is clunky but it’s like a brash old cab driver – nothing fancy but they get you there in a hurry! Who else could get away with it?? 🙂

I don’t think I’ll ever try a dating site, but I know people it worked for.

This site is great because people feel comfortable being vulnerable and genuinely care and help each other.

By the way thanks everyone. You prompted me to reframe MC – not to take it any bit seriously.

Wow, Big blue, you must be quite a good looking man or have some sort of amazing aura to have numerous MC posts directed to you! I know of a friend of a friend who had her flat tire changed by a Good Samaritan. She was enamored of him but felt awkward making a pass because her mother was along for the ride. She posted on MC, he saw it, long story short they’re married now. I think their story is romantic and no less so because CL was involved.

    And then there’s this:

    Hi Kelly,

Thank you for answering a question I have asked others: has there ever been a MC success story? And there we have it! I agree that story is romantic.

Thank you also for the article posting.
