    Dear Alessa,

That was a good story. Thank you. I do not like to give the meaning of the stories. Rather more like to just enjoy it. If it makes one laugh or scratch one’s head then good. Its deeper meaning will show itself when one is ready. Which I really think it takes time and effort. Sometimes my practice is very good and sometimes it is not. But, I am always open to learn more.

Oh, have you made any cat sculptures? Lately, I have replaced a few water valves that go under a sink. Then replaced a thermostat cause the old one wouldn’t turn on the furnace. Later, a person asked if I could make their staircase quieter. I like fixing things because I learn how they work first then try to fix it. Don’t always fix it but I try. Oh, cars is a big one for me. Learned a lot from YouTube videos.

Nite. Hope you are staying warm during this winter.

    Dear Tommy

It’s okay, your way of enjoying stories is valid. No need to pick anything apart. 🩵

Oh, not yet. The cat isn’t due for another month. You’re busy as ever! I like fixing things too. I’m not even as close to as good at it as you though. That’s pretty cool you are able to help others with your skills. 😊

I like the problem solving and it is nice to have something concrete out of it if all goes well. It almost feels creative especially when you start winging it.

Oh yes, got to keep the boy nice and toasty. Just paying the price for it. 😂 😭

I hope you and your family are well? Stay warm and have a Happy Lunar New Year! 🌙 🩵

I have got a new hot water heater to install but waiting on my wife to give me the okay. She is afraid I might mess up. But, I have done this before for a friend’s rental property. Simple shut gas off and drain water heater. Cut the pipes and remove old heater. Put new heater in place and make connections. Plan on using valves with compression fittings so no soldering needed. Well only one solder fitting needed because of the way the pipes are routed. Still too cold out to do oil changes.
Happy Chinese New Year. Year of the horse. I really want to do some travels this year. Maybe a cruise?? See what the wife says??

    Hi Tommy

A cruise sounds like just what the doctor ordered! Is there anywhere you would like to go? 🚢 🌊 ☀️

I have faith that you will manage with the heater just fine. 🩵

Perhaps it’s not so much that she’s afraid of you messing up, just that she is afraid of being without a heater when it’s cold. Even a tiny, remote chance can put the fear in people.

Are you doing anything nice to celebrate? 🩵

Takes two or three hours to do the hot water heater. Turn off the gas and remove the water (takes longest time). Cut the pipes and remove the hot water heater. replace with new hot water heater. Connect the pipes using compression fitting (no soldering needed). Then connect the gas. turn on the water and turn on gas and the pilot light. Done.

Yeah, cruise where I don’t have to cook or wash dishes or laundry. Just sleep and eat. Talk to strangers. Have fun. Was thinking Caribbean?? Doubt it though. Maybe visit my wife’s cousin in Canada??

How are you doing? Hope all is well. Yeah, I do day dream a lot.

    Dear Tommmy

Well it is the time of year to dream big. 😁

I hear you about the vacation. Nothing like a vacation to literally leave your worries at home. The sun sounds nice! Visiting family has it’s merits too.

I’m doing okay, thanks! Tired and heading to bed. 🩵

One day, a monk was on his way home came. When he came to the bank of a wide river, he stared at the great distance in front of him, he thought for hours on just how he would manage to cross such a wide barrier. As he was about to give up, he saw a someone on the other side of the river. The monk yells over to the the man on the other side. “Can you tell me how to get to the other side of this river?” The man her thinks for a moment looks left and right along the river and yells back, “You are on the other side”.

A matter of perspective? Or just a good laugh?

Alessa, have you given it any thought about the cat tower? Wood covered in cloth? Nooks to rest? Sorry, just get the feeling you could do well. But, IDK. Wishful thinking. Hope you are yours are well.

    Hi Tommy

    Who knows? 😊

I built the cat wheel. It is just from a kit. The cat tree is next another kit. First I have to tidy the kitchen because the hob on the cooker broke. An engineer is coming to fix it tomorrow. Wish us luck! 🍀🤞

17 days until the cat. 🐈‍⬛

Hmm for the shelves I was thinking about a large scratching post going vertically. And shelving at different levels with places to jump up and down. I was thinking about oak finished mdf. It needs to be light because the cat is a big boy. I’ve had cats before and the fabrics always got so filthy. Impossible to clean. I’m going to try no fabric this time. I wanted to try a shellac finish on the shelving. If it is too slippery I can sand it a bit. It helps to prevent scratches on the surface too.

I need a folding workbench, a stud finder and to source some materials. It will be a nice little project. I want to flesh out the design once the studs are mapped out. 🩵

    Alessa,

I have found stud finders to be … not useful. have bought 3 different kinds and it did not work well. Ended up tossing them out. And the last one was not cheap. Thinking was maybe a more expensive one would work better. It didn’t. Speaking of broken things. Hob on the cooker? English between US and UK have some differences. UK uses spanner and US uses wrench, Torch and flashlight. So, what is cooker? Is that the stove or cooktop? The infinity switch on my electric stove have broken and the temp is not adjustable. It just turns hot to the hottest setting only. I have bought the replacement switch and changed it. Two of them went out. Replaced both. Then two weeks later, one broke again. Of course, the heating element also broke too. That affects the light that indicates the stove top is hot. My stove top is again acting up. I told my wife better to just get a new stove top. This time just the stove top and not one with an oven. I do most of my baking with the toaster oven.

I don’t have a work bench. I just use a small table downstairs in the basement. But, I do have a vise mounted onto the table. The table is mounted to the wall. I keep my junk on it. Extra parts for electrical, switches, wires, outlets etc. Also, parts for plumbing. Love sharkbite products but am learning to solder. Also lots of tools for working on the car.

Wishing you luck with the cooker. For finding studs, I use a strong magnet and wave it around looking for the screw that holds the plaster board against the wall. Don’t know how it is done in UK?

Thomas your latest Zen story made me laugh. Was it a matter of perspective? Or just a good laugh? I think both 🙂

It just reminded me of a answer to a question I no longer remember… but was probably full of angst: “We work for that which no work is required.” Somehow those words made it possible to enjoy the struggle a little more, and worry about it a little less. The effort is real, but the destination isn’t somewhere else as We “return home discovering we never left, only seeing it for the first time”.

What a beautiful perspective Peter! 🩵

It is an induction cooker top that has broken. The oven works fine on it.

Oh thank you for your advise Tommy about the stud finder. I wouldn’t have known, it’s my first time. I’ll try to find a strong magnet. 🧲

Are you learning to solder electricals or larger metal? I love the sound of your set up! 🩵

    Alessa,

I am not saying to not buy a stud finder. Just that I have bought a few and they did not work for me. You might have better luck than me. However, I now use the magnet method because it works for me. Also, here we frame 16 inches on center. So if we can find one stud then the next one is 16 inches apart. Don’t know the framing rules in UK. Induction cooker. We had a portable one.

On brother in law’s house, we tore down his back screen porch and rebuilt an enclosed porched. I learned about the framing and rules thru You Tube and some background research. Got permits and inspections along the way. Ledger board bolted into house. Cement posts to support the corners. Built the deck floor and then the walls went up. Windows. Roof was not at the same angle. So had to do a low slope roofing. Came out nice. Toughest part was tying it to the house. Roof rafters and roof covering. Could not use shingles. Spent close to … but not my money. I just helped to make sure it followed code. And did not leak.

Oh, if you are thinking of putting shelving as a cat walk then there is going to be a temptation to put things on those shelves. Just a thought.

    Hi Tommy

It’s okay, I don’t mind taking advise. 😁 That makes sense, I’ll have a look to see how far apart the studs are. That’ll make things easier only having to find one. Thanks so much for your help! 🙏

Wow, that’s amazing! 😁 I might not know much about this type of thing, but I know when people know what they’re talking about. 🩵

I’m really short. I probably won’t be able to reach the shelves, they’re going up behind the couch in the living room. 😊
