AlessaParticipantHi Tee
Thanks so much for the book recommendation! I will definitely read it. 🙏 The title sounds like my cup of tea. Peer pressure can cause a lot of problems and my boy is a bit easily influenced. Seeing a girl who is autistic and hits at playgroup encouraged him to try doing it again. After I went through a lot of effort to teach him not to. Thankfully, it’s not happened again since. Trying to keep on top of it all.
Thank for the advice. 😊 That’s what I usually do. The issue is more when he’s outside. The nursery is fairly close to a relatively busy road and some woods. They take them to the woods sometimes and if he isn’t able to walk nicely, hold hands consistently when crossing roads and show general road sense, he won’t be allowed to go with the kids that can do it. I don’t want to miss out on opportunities for him to enjoy himself, especially since he loves the outdoors. It’s all kind of new to him because he used to use reins. So I guess he understands the rules and where he’s supposed to go and not go, but he’s just lacking a bit of practice managing temptations and distractions.
Thanks for everything! Take care, you’re an angel. 😇 🩵

AlessaParticipantHi Roberta
Thanks so much for chiming in! I really appreciate your insights and experience. 🩵
15 kids and 3 EYPs sounds like a much better situation. I’m not sure about the big class myself. I don’t really understand why older kids get smaller classes in school, and the younger kids have such large group sizes here. There are 7 EYPs for 50 kids.
Yeah, I bet it’ll be a bit of a shock for him. He’s not a fan of large groups and noise. At least both nurseries have a separate quiet room. Hopefully, that helps. I resisted getting him ear defenders because I just wanted him to fit in. But he’s started taking a really big interest in nursery rhymes. His nursery rhyme class is rather a big group and it’s usually too noisy for him. Since he’s taking more of an interest, I think it might be worth trying to see if it helps him to join in a bit more. Hopefully it helps! 🩵

TeeParticipantHi Alessa,
you’re very welcome, I hope the books is helpful! Gabor Maté is an expert in childhood needs (and teaches the concept of the inner child too), and he is aware of the mistakes he himself made as a young parent.. So I hope he can give good guidance on authoritative parenting, setting loving boundaries etc.
Oh I see, it’s mostly for the group excursions to the nearby forest that you worry he might have problems with, because it is required that he hold hands with another kid when crossing the road and moves along swiftly, I guess, without stopping frequently and getting distracted, right? Perhaps you can practice walking across the same road with him, holding his hand, so he gets used to it? And if he is reluctant, maybe you can say it’s a practice for his kindergarten and a precondition for going to group excursions?
I do hope he fits in well and adjusts quickly to the new environment. 🙏
Thank you so much for your kindness and support, Alessa, and wishing you and your boy happy summer days! 😊❤️

RobertaParticipantHi Alessa
In the Uk they have different ratio to carer depending on the age of the child, but if you have someone who is a qualified primary teacher then the ratio is much much higher. Also once a child reaches full time education some places starting streaming the classes for basics like english & maths very early on.
Tee’s idea of practicing the walk to the forest is an excellent idea, so that he is familiar with both the route & the concept of holding hands, particularly when crossing the road. At our preschool the newbies start by holding hands with a adult, then they may go with an adult one side & an older child the other, then progresses to being with an older buddy & then eventually he will get to be the older buddy.
Best wishes

AlessaParticipantHi Tee
I think I’m going to either try to find an audiobook of it, or turn a digital copy into an audiobook. It’s just hard to read around a child. I try to stay off my phone, as much as I can. The book really does sound amazing! I’m sold. 😊
Oh thank you! That’s a really good idea. 🩵 Makes things a lot simpler than conquer everything outside which is a lot for a little one to do. 😂 I will definitely do that, to get him used to it. I was thinking about joining the local classes as well to get him used to some of the kids.
That’s very kind of you to say. 🙏 He is loving summer. We went to the beach for the first time properly this year. First time in the water he finds a crab and two fish. We were next to a rock and some seaweed. But still, very lucky! 🍀 It was a big crab too. 🦀 The fish were tiny. 🤏
I hope you’re having a good summer too? 🩵

AlessaParticipantHi Roberta
Well if the nursery does some letters and numbers I’m sure he’d love that. I’m starting to teach the first letter of words to him now. 👍
Wow that’s comforting to get a bit of insight into the crossing the road process. What if kids find holding hands tickly?
The kids are lucky to have you looking after them! 🩵

TeeParticipantHi Alessa,
I’m glad you find the book interesting – hope you’ll find it in the audio format as well!
Aw that’s so sweet that you went to the beach and he got to meet Mr. Crab and 2 fish!! 😊 I’m happy he’s enjoying the summer and has no fear of water either!
Also, it’s good to read that you’ve returned to that beach and are reclaiming it and making new memories… that’s a testimony of an amazing healing, Alessa! ❤️
My summer holidays haven’t started fully yet, but I hope to get to the beach very soon and make a splash 😊

AlessaParticipantHi Tee
I’m steadily working my way through it – Chapter 4 now! 😊
Yeah, he’s having a great summer. ☀️ He saw a herd of deer and a couple of rabbits yesterday on a play date at the local park. 🦌 🐇
Thanks, that’s kind of you to say. 🙏 You made me think of my therapist, I think she’d be really happy for me. Amazing what prolonged exposure therapy, meditation, gratitude practice, a distraction to focus on and some time can do. 🩵
Ooh I hope you get to relax, unwind and enjoy your summer holidays soon! Nothing like a bit of sea and sunshine. 🌊 ☀️ 🩵

TeeParticipantHi Alessa,
wow, you’re really diving into that book – I hope you’re finding it useful! <3
Happy to hear that you and your son are enjoying the summer! Wow, meeting a deer in a local park sounds pretty rare! Or is it a zoo type of establishment?
You really made a great progress with your healing and I’m happy for you! ❤️
I did have some unexpected obstacles getting my holiday started, but I haven’t given up! Hope to head to the beach soon! 😊
Wishing you a pleasant remainder of the summer! ❤️
