samyParticipantI’ve come back to this forum every few years. Now 31. So much has happened. Heartbreak, isolation, feeling used, choosing to leave the team and moving to a different one within our company. For the first time, I want to dare to be optimistic. What if I’ll be fine. Makes me cry even now as I type this. Courage, Competence, Confidence, they seem a bit out of reach. Mostly I drown in loneliness and fear. What ifs. What if I never find love, what if I fail at the new job. What if i’ll never find a stable landing place in life. But there is a small glimmer of maybe it’s ok. It’s just life. Love and heartbreak are 2 sides of the same coin. It happened. I’ve watched so many reels that heartbreak teaches boundaries, or that maybe he was a narcissist. For the longest time i spiralled over that. But now I know, there is no revenge or karma that will make me feel better. The only thing that will help me is seeing myself get better. Healthier, more confident, less vulnerable, less broken. I’ve spent most of my life with a fear of the future and suddenly that future collapsed. Starting from 0 again. The man i thought would protect me left. It was never right, I wish i was more logical. It was not even a relationship just emotionally messy. A married coworker at that. I feel ashamed typing that. I would never justify an affair but it wasn’t one. He was just reassuring, validating, flirty at times. I took him for a soulmate. Someone who finally saw me. Was shattered when i realized he was hanging out with another coworker as well. Maybe he was manipulative. Doesn’t matter. Those were my choices. Now my latest choice. Leave. Extremely painful. To remove him from my life. He already left me but casually comes back in as he wishes. Maybe it’s because we never said it was anything more. So he calls me a friend. But it shouldn’t matter. I lost 2 years to the heartbreak, following him into different teams. All it did was affect my ratings. From top performer to meets expectation. I wasn’t focussed on my career but now i think I never had a true focus. I was just desperate to ease out the dread and pain. That which is older than my time with him. I had to break this hard to finally confront the fear and see what the fear threatens me of is much more bearable than the consequences of trusting the fear and acting. Even if not consciously. I want to be grounded and happy. And hopefully find real love. Not even love, find the life I’m meant to live. The direction and pull that others seem to have. I want to find that. I don’t want my life to be just maintenance. I pray that i find what is meant for me. Never hurt and humiliate myself, waiting for a man to chose me.

anitaParticipantDear samy/ Girija:
How exciting to read from you again. I think that your very first post was on March 3, 2019. You were 23.. 7+ years later.. yes, 31 now. It’s Sat after midnight here. I’ll be back to you in the morning.

anitaParticipantDear Samy:
Wow! I read through the first and last 2 pages of our communication back in 2022, which included me quoting from what you shared in 2019, and I am bamboozled (perhaps the right word to describe it, sounds like it) in regard to how mis- attuned my replies where.
And then, out of frustration that my (mis- attuned) replies were not helpful to you, I announced that I was withdrawing from your thread.
You were kind to me throughout my ongoing mis-attunement. Maybe because you’ve been used to not being seen, or heard or felt for so long 😔
The co-worker you shared about yesterday, he “was just reassuring, validating…Someone who finally saw me”-
Is it a wonder you emotionally attached to him, following him to different teams?
A person starving for validation, starving to be seen- since birth, literally (remember your mother told you that she doesn’t even remember seeing you fir the first time?)-
Is it a wonder that being seen, or the appearance of being seen, is so intoxicating..more than rating at work?

AlessaParticipantHi Samy
It sounds like you’ve found your courage to me. 😊 Remember, courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. Good luck with your new job! It’s always unique settling in, but I’m sure you’ll figure it out. 🩵
I hope you meet some nice people and make some happy memories. 🙏
I think the trick to life is practicing gratitude. Taking any moment you can to enjoy and celebrate the small things. It’s not always easy to get into, especially when you’ve had a hard day. With practice it gets easier. 🩵
Good luck with everything!

anitaParticipantSamy, I want to add something to what I wrote earlier. When I read your post, what stood out most was the courage in allowing yourself to hope again, even while you’re still carrying fear and loneliness. I didn’t want my reflection about past mis‑attunement to pull the focus away from what you shared now. You were speaking from a very real, very present place, and I want to meet you there.
What you described — the heartbreak, the shame, the fear of the future, and also that small glimmer of “maybe it’s ok” — that’s the part I want to stay close to. You’re not wrong for wanting love, or direction, or a life that feels like more than maintenance. And you’re not wrong for feeling afraid. You’re simply in a moment where something in you is trying to move forward, even after everything that’s happened.
I’m here with you in this moment, not analyzing you, not explaining you — just seeing the strength it takes to write what you wrote.

samyParticipantHi Anita,
I don’t know what mis-attunement means.
I had gone over all my threads as well. And this year I realized that it is the same loop. Fear of job, fear of being too ugly. But underneath it all this year I faced the true fear underneath it all. I am afraid of life and carry a belief that there is a fundamental incompetence in me that might mess my life up.
I was practically addicted to him because he gave me an escape. The way he looked at me like I was adorable and intriguing. Work didn’t feel dead or like maintenance. Rating honestly never mattered to me. But therein lies the catch. I used to treat work like being chased by a bear. Stop and you’re dead. Not even over working there were days or weeks when I would just freeze and procrastinate. I can now see that I was in a cage of fear. And he just made me feel better about being in that cage. I suspect I’ve always been depressed due to this fear.
My mom also got cancer for the second time. It wasn’t a recurrence but a diff type early stage in 2025. Surgery was enough.
But that adds to the fear. That life will always throw horrible stuff at me. And it makes me envious of others. Those that get the small problems. For instance the other girl may have been heartbroken as well when he distanced himself but within months got married. Only person she needs to take care of is herself. Life hasnt beaten her down like me.
Optimism for me is an experiment despite overwhelming evidence that too many horrible things happen too frequently to me.
I now have the strongest of desires to live the best life meant for me. I don’t know how one figures that out. Is it by the way we feel Anita. I was suffocating in the previous team. So i moved teams. If the next one doesn’t work out because now with AI we are being overworked. I will move again. I wonder if that is the best life. Trusting I’m not the problem. The right place will help me fix any gaps without feeling distraught. Because so many people travel, marry, aim for the career ladder. I have no intrinsic pull. That does scare me. If I make it to old age I don’t want to regret this life

samyParticipantHi Alessa,
Thanks for the wishes. I realize I need to shift the lens I view life with. I’m always worried and afraid. It takes away the ability for gratitude or living in the present. So much life has passed me by with no real memories. Always worried about what could go wrong. The next meeting. Or maybe I have some horrible illness waiting to spring up. What if I’m supposed to be married but not and will die horribly. All that messy stuff. One good thing about shifting teams is I get a few weeks in the current team where I’m not carrying the mental load. It has honestly helped see what I’m carrying.
The problem with courage for me is. It’s a lot of fear. I don’t want to be that afraid anymore. Sometimes I pray silly prayers like God show me you are real so I can be at ease.

anitaParticipantDear Girija 🙂
Mis-attunement I suppose means not paying enough attention to what the other person is saying, not only to the words, but the feeling behind the words, and rushing to offer interpretations and solutions before really listening.
And so, I want to truly listen to you.
“I am afraid of life and carry a belief that there’s a fundamental incompetence in me that might mess my life up”-
I can see how this belief leads to fear.
“The way he looked at me like I was adorable and intriguing”- I can see how addictive this can be.
And when you’re in a “cage of fear”, I can see how he gave you a temporary break from that cage.
“Only person she (the coworker) has to take care of is herself”- meaning, you feel that you need to, or have to take care of your mother? Other family members?
If so, that certainly adds weight to everything, as in any possible “incompetence” on your part harms those you’re “supposed” to take care of.
Am I understanding what you’re saying?
Have you been taking your family’s dysfunction as if it was something that you are supposed to fix?
“Trusting I’m not the problem”- I so wish to understand this sentence better.
I wonder if you were burdened all along, growing up and onward, by a belief that you’re supposed to fix things that wete out of your control, things you didn’t cause, things no child ( of any age) can fix?
I am asking because I really want to understand ✨️
“I don’t want to be that afraid anymore”- if you were free to worry only about yourself, would you be less afraid?

samyParticipantHi Anita
Not so much that she doesn’t take care of others but there are no concerns in the back of her head. My mom is completely fine but the past has a very long shadow on my future. I don’t feel free. The burden of earning, health. She doesn’t have as much baggage.
I also know I don’t know her life fully. If anything I know myself and that I’m carrying a lot. If I focussed on myself. I don’t want to feel so weak. I feel very weak.
He has since positioned himself as the senior rude and insulting in meetings. As though delays or mistakes justify that. It has eroded my confidence. I was already dealing with imposter syndrome. Now I just feel terrified of being an engineer elsewhere. And I envy him. He got his promotion here, is picking easier work. And I suspect being rude in meetings to control us while he gets away with less load. He doesn’t guide or lead. Just ask questions and it made me feel not enough.
I’m not fixing my family’s dysfunction but I’m carrying a lot of fear of the future. That I may never stabilize. In a place where I am respected and doing my job as it must be done. A lot of people have left or are leaving the team
The one good thing has been talking to the teammates. They echo the same sentiment of being disrespected, not guided but held accountable. That helped me leave otherwise I would stay trying to prove myself. But i also worry about finding a place where I’ll be ok. Worried i won’t.His behaviour at work has helped make it easier to get over him. I regret the time I lost trusting him. Feel like he was just using me for boredom and getting work done. I worked a lot in the previous team. In this team, I was left to myself but at the same time the team is very political. I’ve taken a hit in multiple ways. Mental, physical health and again starting over in a new team.
I’m not good with being in this phase. I procrastinate. I don’t know how to be. But atleast I know and knew I can’t stay. The mental toll of his switch both personally and professionally. And the lack of support has pushed me out. This is not how I thought it would go.
About me not being the problem. It is back to that feeling of something being wrong with me that might be causing my life to go in these dark directions. I want to know that it’s not me. I want to see some light again. I don’t want to feel so unstable in life. Maybe the nature of the teams I’ve been in with him reinforced insecurity among all of us. Maybe walking away is all it needs. But I worry. I am senior now. No one to hand hold. Not that anyone did. But even when he was not nice to me I had him. And in life I feel that isolation of constantly trying to arrive at something. But the fear never settled
I don’t think most people carry this much self doubt and fear. I want to know how not to. Most of my worries are still around me. Having to face the pain of bad health in me or family, no room for ease, not being a good lead in the new team. And also not knowing the what to make of my life.

anitaParticipantDear Girija 🙂
Thank you for explaining more. I can hear how heavy everything feels for you right now — not because you’re carrying your mother’s problems, but because you’re carrying the fear that life can suddenly become unstable again. That fear makes everything feel bigger, and it makes you feel smaller. I understand why you say you feel weak. When someone has lived with fear for so long, it can make even normal challenges feel overwhelming.
What you shared about work makes sense too. When someone already feels unsure inside, being treated rudely or dismissed in meetings can shake confidence even more. It’s not that you’re not capable — it’s that your sense of self is fragile, so his behavior lands harder. And hearing that your teammates feel the same disrespect tells me this isn’t about you being “not enough.” It’s the environment. You didn’t imagine it. You didn’t cause it.
I can also see how leaving the team was both necessary and frightening. You’re starting over again, without the familiar patterns — even the unhealthy ones — and that can make the fear louder. You’re used to looking outward for stability, and now you’re trying to find it inside yourself. That’s a big shift. It makes sense that you feel unsteady.
When you say, “I want to know it’s not me,” I hear how deeply you want a solid place inside yourself — a place that doesn’t collapse every time life gets difficult. You’re not asking for perfection. You’re asking for a sense of being okay, of being capable, of being someone who can move through life without feeling like everything is a threat. That’s not too much to want.
I’m here with you as you sort through all of this. You don’t have to rush. You don’t have to prove anything. You can keep sharing at your own pace, and I’ll keep listening.

samyParticipantHi Anita
Is it just a decision. That it is not something about me. That life can go either ways and I just keep moving? Is that what happy people do? That’s the question I’m seeking an answer to. I wonder if it is just that. Optimism is still hoping for the outside to be ok. Whereas I think what makes more sense is to decide I don’t need to make one specific thing work. If it didn’t that’s ok. On to the next.
Another thing would be if something doesn’t click and makes me feel broken. It isn’t for me. Otherwise I’m treating my self as a work in progress construction. And that explains the anxiety. Will the building collapsed. Always taking situations as something I must do or mustn’t do that makes or breaks it is making me miserable.
If I trace it back I was called nerd a lot in school. Not in a she’s so smart way. But she scores well coz she is a bookworm. I think I internalize that. And worry that not being smart enough will eventually cause repurcussions. I tend to always wonder what am I missing as an engineer that could catch up to me
But that can be a long list. Every other engineer has something different. I don’t see folks beating themselves up.The other part is also the damage to my health from all this. The overeating and overthinking . I think I’ll try it. Deciding I’m not the problem. Maybe for now I will leave more often
I stayed in the same company for 9 years despite never being happy. This set of folks I’ve worked with for maybe 3 years. Moving to a team following him.Girija

I will respond to your recent post of 2 hours ago a little later. Right now I want to share with you my thoughts after reading through pages 2-7 of your previous thread (winter of 2022).
I think that you and I have a few things in common even though we grew up in different countries and 30 years apart (and please correct me if I’m wrong):
We both grew up in unsafe homes where our parents did not provide us with the emotional safety every child needs, the safety that allows a child to be carefree enough to develop a solid sense of self, a safety- within that allows you not only to survive life but to thrive, to find joy or at the least, contentment.
* Please let me know if I’m talking more about myself than about you.*
Anyway, with a fragile (not a solid- enough) sense of self, life is very, very difficult. The anxiety inside is very difficult to live with.
If this resonates, first thing I’d like to tell you is that none of this is your fault. There is nothing wrong with you. What you are experience is a direct consequence of growing up consistently unsafe, with no one solid to hold on to.
There’s also the issue of over- responsibility, feeling that others (beginning with our weak or ailing parents) need us and we’re therefore not free to branch out and live our own lives.
I am using my phone, but transferring to the computer, will continue there.

anitaParticipantDear Girija:
Reading your latest post, I can see how heavy it feels to treat every situation as a test of your worth. When you say you feel like a building that might collapse if one thing goes wrong — that’s exactly what happens when a person grows up without enough emotional safety. You end up carrying the belief that you are the problem, and that every outcome reflects something broken in you.
But it doesn’t. Sometimes things simply don’t click, and it’s not a verdict on who you are.
You mentioned worrying you’re not smart enough, or that something will “catch up” to you. That fear didn’t start in adulthood — it started when you were called a nerd in a way that made you feel small instead of proud. You internalized the idea that you must constantly prove yourself.
What you’re considering now — deciding you’re not the problem and leaving situations that don’t feel right — is a healthy shift. It’s not giving up. It’s giving yourself permission to stop treating every moment as a test you must pass. You deserve to feel steady inside, not like you’re always one mistake away from collapse.
Please let me know if this post and the one before this one resonate 🙂

samyParticipantHi Anita,
That is true. Feeling fragile as a child. I know it starts from there. As a child you are helpless but when made to feel like you are responsible completely for your future safety you naturally feel inadequate. Not you, me. I didn’t do the internal software upgrade of now I’m enough. It’s not me.
You aren’t just talking about yourself. That is me. Worrying as a pre teen about how I’ll get a job and earn. And then freezing out of worry that I won’t measure up. Carried that into college. Where I felt I’m not good enough to interview. Instead of looking at it as something you prepare for. Fixed mindset. Then got placed into the top salary package. Yet felt like I’m not enough. All the while not realising that everyone else is just learning. And freely. No burden.
I look at him. 8 years my senior. So many delays and misses. Yet he doesn’t carry that burden. It makes me sad having to leave this team. Why did I have to face that behaviour. But then again if it didn’t get that bad i probably would not have left. Staying in the familiar painful. But this now exposes me to the fear I have. New team, new project being the lead. I was always an excellent lead because I’m great at carrying the load. But this time due to heartbreak I wasn’t in it as much and they immediately withdrew. It woke me up to corporate. And made me see why they are doing fine. You have to be cold and self serving. While I carry the worry that it must be me.
Thank you for telling me it’s not my fault. How have you built that safety. I could learn from that. I don’t want to go through life always afraid of what’s ahead or worry if I did something wrong in the past
It is painful realising a man came in as he liked and left as he liked while leaving me with the realisation that I held on for too long at my own detriment further aggravating my sense of a lack of good future.
